Beginner seeks input, RE: Hobie cat sail/mast combo...

As a beginner here, was wondering if anyone has any
experience and/or knowledge of using a Hobie 14
mast/sail combo on an iceboat?? Use would be
casual sailing only, NOT racing, although the
performance of this combo on my Hobie 14 may not
leave much choice. The boat, as I have drawn it up,
would be roughly 15' long by 10 feet wide. The
Hobie 14 mast is 22' high, the sail roughly 85-90
SQF. I intend to sail it only in lighter winds -
I have a smaller windsurfer mast/sail for more wind.
Intend to make the boat easily convertible from one
mode to the other. Any input??

Building Aluminum Boom

I need a new boom for my DN, because my wood boom is done. Any thoughts about building an Aluminum boom?

Thanks,

DN boom

I am making an aluminum boom for my DN. Other booms I've seen have alot of ability to adjust the blocks. Why is this? It seems that because the blocks on the hull are not adjustable you would set the blocks on the boom to them and be done. What am I missing?

alumium mast sections

Newbie looking at building a DN and needs info on where to get a bare aluminum mast extrusion to fit the Sarns hardware. Is it a Dwyer section, Kenyon section etc. Where to source would be a great help as well!

It's Time!

Shop is insulated furnace is operational and the Skeeter is in pieces. Thanks to the efforts of John Loomis and Pat Hutner the shop is isulated. Not a fun Job but they stuck with it until complete. The regattas are gong to happen early this year so we're getting on it. The Skeeter restoration is in full swing. When I figure out the picture posting thing I will put a couple of progress photos up. Shop is open Monday and Tuesday nights from six to ten at my house if anyone is interested in stopping by.

Summer Projects?

Hi all,

There's a pretty active year-round builders group here in Madison:
http://iceboat.org/images/boatshops/willy/willy.htm
http://iceboat.org/images/boatshops/nord/nordboats.htm

In Jim Nordhaus' shop there are two Renegades under construction/rennovation, along with a DN modification, a slew of insert runners, and a bunch of minor repairs/upgrades. Bill Mattison and Paul Krueger are hard at work on their Skeeters, Jerry and Greg Simon are building a new Renegade, and Doug Kolner is building a new DN.

I'm curious about what off-season projects other people are working on. Post some photos!

Runner Oiling

Summer is fun, but with the onset of humid weather, I remembered over the weekend that it was time to check the runners for rustproofing. The WD40 that I have used in the past never did a very good job of protection for anything but short periods, so I decided several months ago to try something longer lasting. Grease was the first thought, but that is to messy. After cleaning three sets of steel and one set of stainless with a scouring type pad, a coat of 90 weight gear oil was applied. Well I was pleasantly surprised this past weekend to find them all rust-free and still very well coated with the heavy oil.

Which 2 seater?

Varnish

What is the best type of varnish or finish for wooden spars? Any other tips are appreciated.

DN Ski modification?

Has anyone built an iceboat adapted for snow using a ski/skate modification? I'm a first time DN60 sailor as of last week on the Hudson River...wow...but the new snow has put the kabash on sailing. Just wondering if anyone has experimented with a snow design. thanks

Corey Hughes, Nite 341

I am currently building a new three piece plank for my Nite and would welcome expierenced comments on what initial crowns have been used when gluing up. We have prepared stripped Ash skins over a tapered poplar core.

Also, will be building a new mast over the next few months and I am looking for ideas on: (1)racing spec class mast, and (2)a 20 foot, out of class mast for open class compitetion.

DN Plank Construction article?

Looking for a link to an online DN plank construction article if anyone knows of one.

Thanks.

Braided sheet line and blocks

I am interested in information on rigging my DN with a braided sheet line. What size of line, how long the is the braid to be, what pulleys/blocks work with the braid (including mfg/part/model #'s) and anything else pertinent to this area. The pulleys on my recently obtained DN won't allow passage of a braided 1/4" line, hence any time the sheet is hauled in, the braid is in the bottom of the boat. Not much help in my estimation. Ratchet blocks, etc.???
