How To

How to go fast, repair iceboat, upgrade equipment, or any question about iceboating.

JD plank Opti-mization

JD plank Opti-mization No, this isn't some new secret go fast experiment. It's actually JD cutting up a perfectly good DN plank for use on an Opti. It's been said that he's also planning on cutting down his Skeeter plank for use on his Nite, and cutting down his Nite plank for use on his DN.

End of the Season Storage

It's that sad time of the year when we put our iceboats away for the season. Here's a few of the things to check and do prior to storage:
1. I put a thin coat of 30wt. motor oil on all my runner blades.
2. I take the battens out of my sails and make sure I store them on a flat surface.
3. I check the mast, plank, and boom for any problems and fix them now!! rather then
waiting for first snow next fall.
4. I store my plank on a flat surface and put a spacer under the center of the crown
so it doesn't flatten out over the summer. One year I had a plank loose 1/4" of

Light air sailing

Maybe we can get the tech committee to rule on using thes bottle rockets when there is no wind or possibly allow each skipper one to be used at his discretion during a regatta??

New to this...does anyplace rent Snowfers/Icesurfing equip?

Does anyone know if any places in/around the Twin Cities rent out ice surfing equipment? I'd love to try before I buy.

I've just learned about icesurfing...I live out in Hudson, and Lake St. Croix looks like a perfect playground.

Side board repair

A while back JD posted a repair technique for fixing cracked sideboard using shop vac to suck epoxy through crack. Could someone repost or post link.
I beleive the fix required placing paper towel over crack on one side covered with plastic .and placing epoxy on oposite side , sliting plastic and using shop vac to suck epoxy through showing wetting in paper towel?
Any help would be appreciated

adjusting nite steering pedals

I'm too short to reach the factory settings. any tips on adjusting?

Steering play.....

Having had my DN for only a week now, I notice a
small amount of play in the steering, and it seems
to be in the shaft the tiller handle attaches to.
It's not much of a problem until you hit 30-35 MPH,
then every little dimple in the ice wants to shift
you right/left. I can imagine that at 50 it would
be a BIG problem. How is this steering shaft put
together, and is this repairable or not?

Any comments welcome....Blackice

DN sails

The bug has bit me bad. I just gotta ice boat, that being said, I've got all the skills to build a boat out of any material that the rules allow and intend to start with a DN. What I am not is a sailmaker. Where do most go to buy sails? There doesn't seem to be a glut of used out there and if it comes to it I'll have to go with a new one. Like everyone else I'd like to keep it cheap, but the sail just might be the most expensive item. I'm guessing that there are good sailmakers in the TC area, I just don't know who to trust.

Thanks in advance, Kent

Need book/instruction advice for a beginner

I am about to buy an iceboat but I've never sailed on solid water before.
I do sail on liquid water and I've skied across lakes pulled by a kite but I'm sure I have a lot of new things to learn. Including basics such as keeping it from flying away while I'm walking to shore to water a tree.
The man I buy the boat from will not be able to tutor me and I do not know any iceboaters so I'd like to buy a book to help me get started.

Could someone suggest one or some online source to help me get started or other good advice? I'm in NW Wisconsin about 40 miles north of Eau Claire.

Thanks!

Ice boat experience for my husband for Xmas?

My husband is longing for an iceboat but we can't swing it right now either financially or time-wise...I'd love to get him a 1/2 day of iceboating as a Christmas gift which he would absolutely love. He's an exerienced Hobie sailor and windsurfer. Is anyone willing to make a few bucks and give this deserving man a 1/2 day of heaven? We live in Tonka Bay right across the street from the lake. Need to know soon. Thanks!!!

Great day on lower lake Mtka ends in splinters

The ice was so sweet today. I had some great rips until a spin out ended my day.Awww crap! The first thing I noticed was the mast slowly going down. Then I looked to the side and the plank was gone! I was about two miles away from my launch spot. I lashed the broken piece of the plank to the remaining plank with the mainsheet so I could push it home. Then Andy and Rats came by and we were able to fashion a tow by putting my front runner on Andy's plank and I straddled the bow of my boat and held onto the side stay of his. My broken plankPretty slick and it saved a long walk home.
