Boat Building Blues...Materials are Scarce.

Tring to find lumber here in the Twin Cities is harder than I thought. Called several lumber yards and saw mills and can't find lumber to suit the construction of my new DN hull.

I have heard that people are substituting Bass for Sitka Spruce. Any ideas where to find lumber long enough for the task at hand, 2 @ 1"x8"x14' & one for the stringer 1"x3"x12.5'

You can save an easy four pounds on the total hull weight by using the right plywood. Ask JD for the specific wood to use on the plywood layup.

As far as I know Madison is the closes place to Mpls to find Sitka spruce in lengths 1 x 8 x 14. I did find a place here in Mpls that had stripes of Sitka 1 x 1 x 14+ for building canoes which you could glue together and plane down, however I can’t remember the name.

The lumber yard I have bought some beautiful Ash from is Young Blood Lumber in Northeast Mpls (Central and Broadway)
