When the mast exploded, the top half shot down through the ice just behind the runner plank.
I've never heard anything that sounded like that before!
All three shrouds snapped like sewing thread!

This experimental mast design worked well for many years. The resulting compression failure was caused by not releasing sheet-line tension soon enough when jibing.
