Local DN'er, Paul Larson shows Meyer and Miller the great sheet of ice on Green Lake site of the 2012 Western Regional. Huge 3mi X 5mi lake with NO SNOW or hazards! Excellent ice and fast.
Dr standing in middle of Waconia Jan 2, 2012.
Ice was crusty snow and pebble ice with at least 5 open springs. This is the largest we sailed by. Very dangerous out there now.
This is what grade 10 ice looks like with a slight water covering in 42F. Taken by Adam at 1PM New Years Eve day near Gail's island and Excelsior Bay. Some smiley faces for the 6-8 of us who scrub raced in 15+ wind. GPS recorded 54.7 in one of the races.
Meyer, Miller & Kennedy sailing on a fine Monday afternoon with NNW winds of 10-15.
This marks 10 days of iceboating this season!! Looking forward to a brown Xmas.
11 DN's still set up from a fun Sat on West Arm. Looking out my window now looks like a great day shaping up. Could blow 15 out of SSW. Don't even have to move the marks!
Measured 3 inches on Spring Bark Bay out from Landing.
South half of bay appears open past the end of Casco Pt.
Sailed 5-6, 2 lap races in 5-12 wind on a great sheet of ice. These are the 8 boats that had a fun first day of the season!
Parked in middle of Little Detroit Lake with 3.25 inches of ice at 2PM. The wind came up to 6-7 just after this photo and ripped around the entire bay. Stopped at a couple of spots that looked to be open water but were previous holes that had frozen over smooth. The texture was not as smooth as Big Detroit but better than Pepin NA's in 2008!
2.5 inches on the smooth Big Detroit Lake out 50 yards from Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes, MN. No hazards within eye sight.
Smoother than Little Detroit, but decided to sail Little Detroit with 3.25 inches for safety reasons!
