Monday, Wawasee is now a 8.5 we sailed all day Saturday and found only 1 ridge ,not even in the race area. Sunday was just a little too cold and windy but really hardened up the ice. We'll see what mother nature throws at us this week and hope any snow stays away! Rick Lemberg DN4155
From the National Weather Service Forecast for Lake Minnetonka.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy and cold and blustery, with a high near 5.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -16.
Sunday: Sunny and cold, with a high near 3.
Ugh... if the numbers were only Celsius we'd be looking pleasant.
I heard a rumor that Hayward has good ice , anybody know about this??
Drove down to Milwaukee on Thursday and yes they got hosed with snow Thursday night. Looked like they had pretty good ice conditions up to that point. Pepin was snow covered but the LaCrosse area looked pretty good as well as Hudson on Friday afternoon. However, someone will need to investigate those areas much more.

Lake Calhoun in MSP is 20% clear, with some junk dry snow on it.
It has been decided. We will flood part of Lake Calhoun tommorow, Saturday.
(with 5 hp, 150 gpm pump)
But with it we can pump 40m**3 of water (11,000 gallons) in an hour. This will cover an area of 160 meters x 40 meters under 6mm water, per hour.
So in three hours we will have "rained" a quarter inch on an area of 320m x 80m. (1000' x 250').
It wil be 27F in the day and 10F on Satuday night and hopefully the chance of snow is just that.
We will meet at noon on Saturday on the west side of the lake (west calhoun parkway).
"Macca" sends the following: The St Croix crossing the border at Hudson looks good, appears to be 60-70 % Clear Ice with shallow drifts.
Of course that means he was looking down from the bridge while driving and not standing on the ice... Which somebody needs to do.
Carpe DN
Gave Pepin an extensive look both by air and on foot 1/24 & 1/25 about 2/3 in. of new snow with an additional crust underneath, 'doesn't look good any-time soon'jw

There are 25 hockey rinks worth of clear ice on Nokomis, courtesy of the US Pond Hockey championships. Has anyone seen it?
1/24/08 - I took closer look today. A huge area is cleared but some snow blew on and there are some pretty solid berms in places. Forget it...

Reports are miles of black ice in Menominee, MI
expect Green and Geneva to kick in the cold snap as well!
5 hours isn't that far for iceboating...
Something closer may present itself.

We got on the ice for a week...
in terms of person /day maybe 500
in terms of people on the ice because we were there, maybe 2000
competitor injuries requiring med attention, 0
Boats broken, a few
Hearts broken, a few
near as I know, everybody got home safe, and we left nothing but runner tracks.

Weeks 7 & 8 have been all about the North American Championships, which were sailed here in Minnesota.
This weekend looks chilly, but after today's and tomorrow's weather events, dry. The temperatures are forecast to reach the sailing envelope for next weekend, possibly above freezing near Lake Pepin.
At present, we have one known venue in the state with suitable ice, and a couple of suspects that may emerge.
Alright guys, this will be my last chance to get out on the ice before spring semester starts so where can i find decent ice? Is North East Iowa still sail worthy?
That's right... this is the sixth week in a row that Minnesota iceboaters have been on the ice with DN's...
Last weekend, thru Monday, 5 Minnesota DNers made the trip to execellent ice in Okoboji, Iowa, Iowa? OK, it's close enough to the Minnesota State Line that you can see it from the the sailing area, the "local Natl Weather Service" reporting station is in Jackson Minnesota. : ) We probably should have kept these lakes, never given them to Iowa, they get the early caucus, we get the lakes.
This weekend, we're looking at a DN Western Regional Regatta, boatable ice some place in Minnesota for six straight weeks... where have you guys been?
