Good News for Iceboaters; Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age...

From Pravda... http://newsfromrussia.com/science/earth/106922-0/

"The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years...."

Just think, this could mean a Great Southern Challenge Regatta...

Duluth - Lake Superior

Latest Modis Imagery... Looks like Lake Superior on the south shore, and outside of Duluth might be promising...

Are there any Duluth Iceboaters that can give us a report?

SE Iowa

Logged 26 tough miles on drifted ice at Lake McBride New Year's day. Not recommended for winds under 20MPH.

Local Ice...

At 10:00 local this ice reporter walked on Lake Phalen, St Paul, MN... and was surprised by the lack of snow cover on the ice. Presumably there are other lakes in the area in better condition.

Conditions: there is about 1.5" of light snow covering 90% of this non-motorized lake. The ice is moderately rough, it's hard without sailing to know if it's rougher snow ice/refrozen slush than Pepin was at the NA's last winter...

Ice Ice Ice

Lake Monona is sailable. Greg Simon and Doug Kolner checked several area lakes today.

http://iceboat.org/

Greg reports that the east end of Lake Monona rates as 8 out of 10, with over 8" of ice, and a light pebbly surface.

Greg and others will sail the lake on Wednesday. Here are the schedule of events:

Thursday, January 1: 10:00 AM 4LIYC Bloody Mary Eye Opener & Holiday Series

Friday, January 2: Tuning & Scrub racing

A decision will be made by noon on Friday whether to hold the Grand Slam Regatta in conjunction with 4LIYC club racing.

White Bear Conditions?

Some Nite sailors from southern Wisconsin are looking for Twin City ice to sail this weekend (6th/7th) Does anyone have information on White Bear or Bald Eagle for that matter?

Minnewaska, Nov 30, 2008

Minnewaska, Nov 30, 2008Lake Minnewaska, Glenwood Minnesota was sailed today by 7 DN'ers. Launched right next to the Big Ballrom, bar and restaurant right in town. Sand beach and parking lot. Able to back right on to ice from this city park. Ice was 4-5 inches every where Adam drilled. A couple of pressure ridges 2-5 inches high about 1/2 mile from shore running East/West. Able to slowly ride over with a little water visable at the crack. The ride out downwind in 5-6 MPH of wind was slow, trying to glide thru many 3/4inch hard drifts. Once past the pressure ridge it was much improved with 1/2 inch hard drifts covering 30% of the ice. The rest was black hard ice. Wind built to 15MPH. Set a 1.5 mile course and were ripping. No obstacles out on course. No damage done. A few bumpy spots but no hazzards noted, except the ones above.

Swede Lake on Sunday?

Does anyone know if Swede Lake ice survived the warmth of Saturday so it will be safe tomorrow?
