The IceMaker and I measured 4 inches if solid clear ice on Christina. Excellent ice. Osakis had 2-3 near shore but less further out . We dared not walk further. Unsuitable.
Big Detroit smooth ice out 100 yes but 2.5 inches. Little Detroit had 3.25 inches and somewhat more texture. Set up, wind at 3-8. Covered most of the little Detroit. No observed hazzards. Clocked 40 mph on GPS during an hour of sailing. Kiefer took a run too and lifted the runner a few times. Some areas had a rumble and a few chips flying. Stopped and checked two other local lakes, both with similar ice at 3-4 inches.
To Epicity, and Beyond! (tm)
In another Quixotic adventure for intrepid ice checking/reporting Team known sometimes as "...and fools we are not", 4695 and 5369 (the same guys who brought you the epic ice on Pepin for the 2008 NA's,) the guys who know when to quit, and write a story that gets ripped by the Wall Street Journal, even when we can't go ripping.

And boy do I have a bone to pick with Barry Newman, when I have a little time.
We're off of find something off the charts!
I'm expecting several updates during the day from Turkey Trotters in West Central Minnesota, the ice will be thin, be safe out there, check in with your observations.
A scouting trip with Lucky Mike DN 5369 is planned for Friday morning, Christina, Dead and Detroit, we'll go until we find Epic...with a boat on the roof.
Expeditions are forming, JD is leading one on Saturday, most likely to Christina, unless we find a higher grade of perfection. Ignore the snow in the forecast, it will be of no consequence.
reports of good ice all over the Thunder Bay District, out at White Fish lake they where skating on it sat and Sun.I will be busy out scouting all week sailing as much as possible
There's talk of sailing this weekend, checking the primary Great Western Challenge Regatta sites, I expect the Ice will be EPIC.
A thorough ice checking trip prior to the weekend is planned if there is support for this trip and ice report it will happen for sure!
If you find value in these Ice Reports, or in the Great Western Challenge Regatta You may if you wish, contribute to support the IceMaker's efforts to tell the IceBoating Story to a larger audience,
I expect the warm temps and light rain forecast for tomorrow will remove all the snow from our local lakes, leaving the ice clear, resurfaced, thick, substantially untouched by the sunlight, in other words perfect spring ice.
That said, the earlier melts, plus what we're going to see over the next three days will no doubt raise the water levels beyond their current level, causing water around the shorelines, some ramps might be needed for dry foot access.
50 degrees on Saturday? Calhoun? See the sights? Maybe grill some food on the ice? a picnic for sure.
i plan on sailing thurs, anyone else? out of harrys. meyer PS: wed am, i really called this one. will need to see how much water was on the ice prior to snow. check it out thurs. might sublimate a little on thru/fri/sat. most wind on fri/sat to get thru this stuff.
Short Course Racing's still IceBoating...
Conditions at Primary Site Buffalo Lake are questionable, a more thorough inspection is ongoing.
Ice reporters are currently walking the Ice on White Bear Lake, for this now epic and international 3rd Johnson Cup. MikeM from Thunder Bay is here and chomping to go racing.
The ice on Sturgeon Lake, site of the 2010 Great Western Challenge is reported to be most excellent.
Ice reports are encouraged.
It's already epic.

Bring your iceboat to the WYC Winter Party: http://www.wyc.org/
The tracks are plowed in Wayzata Bay, a map of the as plowed tracks will be posted shortly. There's a road out to the sailing area, the ramp is very difficult, we plan to park on the dormant upwind/downwind course, and sail reaching legs.
SAVE THE DATES! MARCH 12 & 13 For the fourth successive Johnson Cup, short course championships!
Notice of Exhibition Race is forthcoming!
The medium range forecast is outstanding, with colder than average temps forecast for the next two weeks, we're lining up for what may be the best weather (warm temps and great spring ice) that we've ever sailed on. What's good for us isn't good for Fargo-Moorhead's flood outlook, because when the melt happens it'll be fast, it's likely to be a gully washer.
My bet is there will be (N)ice reports coming soon...
Calhoun is looking dark http://www.kare11.com/weather/skycam-viewer.aspx?map=calhouncam.jpg
Harriet looks rumbly, and we know she's got a hole...http://www.lhycsailing.com/webcam/lhyc.html
Has anyone been out on Tonka to see how much snow melted? Any chance of re-freeze for this weekend's colder temperatures?
John Hayashi reports good ice thickness and snow below his Nite's runner-stiffeners. No problem sailing today in the moderate breeze.
Many thanks to Deb Whitehorse at Iceboat.org for the "heads up" on Green Lake.
The forecast should clear off all the snow by next weekend.
Watch the Green Lake Ice Yacht Club website for updates.
For Wilmar MN today, 25 gusting 50, 42 degrees F, and sunshine, how much snow will it melt?
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 42. Breezy, with a west wind 13 to 16 mph increasing to between 25 and 28 mph. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph.
