Western Challenge Regatta || No battle on Battle Lake

2005 Western Challenge
Battle Lake, Mn

Well, once again friday was the best day, and that wasn't too great. The ice was a big sheet of ice, but with an inch or more of snow on it -- it was too sticky for the very light breeze we had. There were only a few competitors that had the right runners to go in this sticky snow. Something about the cold temps, new ice, light sticky snow that made the regular runners very sticky. We never had any wind to get the fleet moving.

We had a great turn out of over 50 boats (54 was the latest count). It was epic in the fact that never before have we been skunked.. It's usually a very windy area.. but not this last weekend. The weather forecast was upped to 10-20mph for sunday, but it never happened.

Battle Lake, Sunset Friday, Western Challenge Update

Sunset, Battle Lake, MN, 48 DN's are currently set up on the ice, sailors from Maryland, North Carolina, Six europeans, a serious pool of talent.

There's a hint of snow on the ice, which accompanied by the cool temperatures is plenty sticky in the 3-5 mph we were sailing in today. Around 4:00 the breeze picked up and a dozen or so guys sailed maybe 6 races before the sun went down.

It's gonna be epic.

Western Challenge Regatta, ON, W. Battle Lake, Battle Lake, Minnesota

lake christina, 2004:12:03 17:35:41	I am pleased to announce the site for the 2005 Western Challenge Regatta will be West Battle Lake, Battle Lake, MN. The ice on Battle Lake is EPIC.

Conveniently located half way (15 miles) between perfect OtterTail and Excellent Christina, North of the predicted snow, with a good wind and evening temperature forecast. Battle Lake has a large sailing area immediately off of the West Public Access. Local amenities, including sail in dining.

Directions to the launch site on West Battle Lake, will be posted in a few moments... link to map:

Western Challeng Regatta, Primary Location

The Minnesota Ice Sailing Assoc. is currently checking ice around the entire state.

As of this moment, 0700 Wednesday, we know there are several lakes with some degree of suitablilty. We're (DN Sailors) investigating lakes in the Fergus/Alexandria (Christina, Osakis); Perham/Ottertail (Otter Tail,Rush,Dead); Detroit Lakes (Detroit, Height of Land, Toad); Brainerd (North Long Lake); Glenwood (Reno, Mary, Minnewaska); Willmar (Big Kandoyhi, Lillian); & Buffalo areas.

After we've discerned which of these offer the best area/surface & forecast, but no later than 7:00 local time this evening. We'll post the primary site for the event. The two key drivers in the decision are: 1: there's a minor snow event in the forecast (more in the south, little in central Minnesota) and forecast daytime temperatures (more for the comfort of sailors than making ice).

Western Challenge Regatta, ON, Primary Site Buffalo Lake, Buffalo, MN

The Minnesota Ice Sailing Association is pleased to announce the Western Challenge Regatta is ON for this weekend, scrub racing Friday December 2 and racing Dec. 3 & 4!!!

A highly competitive international field is expected to compete for this prestigious first ice regatta of the season in North America.

The primary location for the event is Buffalo Lake, Buffalo, Minnesota. The lake is currently frozen, and beginning tomorrow, we expect to be making ice for the balance of the week.

As there remains uncertainty in the forecast in terms of snow fall, potentially heavy snowfall someplace in the region, several other potential venues within 2 hours of the primary location will continue to be monitored as the storm system currently impacting our region moves out of the area.

Ice Checking, Sailing Lake Christina,

At this moment, the primary site for The Western Challenge Regatta is Lake Christina, Ashby, MN.

Details, including launch site, lodging, etc. will be posted after the offical decision 7:00 Local Time, Sunday 27 November.

It's my understanding a number of sailors will be sailing Lake Christina this weekend, November 25, 26 & 27. checking the ice, and reporting conditions for suitability. If you're planning on joining in the ice checking fun, please let me know by email.

that would be mark(at)onemorebid.com

It's gonna be great.

Minnesota Ice Sailing Assn will sail this weekend, starting 0900 saturday... Sturges Park, Buffalo, MN

- We're planning on grilling brats and maybe playing some bocce or croquet in the afternoon (assuming we can't be sailing when it gets too soft) US 602 claims he's bringing the brats & the beer.

- 6-8 DN's have indicated they'd be there... maybe more.

This will likely be the last hurrah for those of you that don't want to see what it looks like around Christina this time of year... it's still cold up north.

First Start 9:00 show up early the sun comes up at 6.00

It's going to be great!
