The 2017 World Championships and North American Championships are in the Books. The regatta was a huge success due to the tireless efforts of DN Western Region Commodore Mike Miller (DN 5369 US). Nobody will ever know how many hours it really takes to organize, not one, but two international regattas but it was obvious that Miller put in the time as both regatta's were sailed without a hitch. Thank you Commodore Miller for a job well done. The 108 sailors from 9 countries each tip their helmet to you!
The DN Worlds and NA's are scheduled for the Western Region, January 22-28, 2017.
Here is a promo video put out by Madison Sailor Dave Elsmo. Think Ice.
The weekends regatta will be held on Lake Monona in Madison, Wi. Launch site will be at the Olin Park 1156 Olin-Turville Ct., Madison Wi. Same place as last years NA's, on the SW corner of the lake.
Dan Hearn and Deb have been working with the City Parks Dept for a bulk parking pass to avoid parking costs to the racer. More info by Thursday or Friday.
The ramp is suitable for trailers to back right on 12 inches of ice. Be careful of the small stream to the left side.
WESTERN REGIONALS PRELIMINARY CALL!
Jan 7-8, 2017
Wisconsin has ice all over the place!
Madison Wi is the primary location. Could be Kegonsa or Monona. They have smoothed over some today and going to rain a bit more tonight. Above freezing temps for another 24 hours, followed by cold and wind. Ice will thicken on both lakes. No snow in the forecast with moderating temps by the weekend should lead to great ice.
The DN Western Region Championships most likely will be called "ON" for this weekend, Jan 7-8, 2017. The smart money says we will sail in Madison but Winnebago may also be an option. Watch dnamerica.org/forum/index.php for details. You might notice a slight change in the layout of the race course. I suspect we will sail an INLINE COURSE with DARLING MARKS. It will be the same course we will sail at the WORLDs and NAs. Ask questions if you are unfamiliar with the new course layout.
The 2017 DN Worlds are coming to the Western Region Jan 22-28.
Early deadline registration without penalty deadline ends Dec 31. No extensions are planned.
Save money by getting this done in the next 5 days. Go to the na.idniyra.org website to register.
There are now almost 50 pre registered!

We are going to Brainerd
Hey,
The site is the small bay of Long Lake on 371 north of Brainerd. Directly East of Gull Lake and visible from Hwy 371. There is a public launch and a wayside rest there. The bay is 1.2 miles across with low shorelines. The ice is smooth, uniform thickness and should be great. If you are the first to arrive please remember the buddy system and be careful as this is new ice as of a few days ago.
We will follow up with hotel recomendations or post them here if you would likew to help.
The cold weather has been cold and there is more cold weather on the way!
It's on!
Primary site is Lake Christina, Ashby Minnesota, mile marker 8.
Friday Dec 9th (practice, like usual), More formal racing Sat-Sun Dec 10th and 11th.
Good job on thinking ice everybody!

2017 Notice of Race
Western Lakes Regional DN Championship Regatta
January 7-8, 2017
Organizing Authority: International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association
Host: North American Western Region
1. Rules:
All Minnesota DN racers need to mark your winter calendars now.
The Western Region only hosts this big one once every 6 years. Now it is our turn!
http://na.idniyra.org/2017worlds/
…it seems sailors in the DN fleet are not the only ones getting schooled these days by Matt Struble. Matt is as fast on soft water as he is on ice. Maybe faster. Matt dominated the 2016 North American A Class Catamaran Regatta. He won the Overall and Foiling Division to retain the title he won last year. But check out his finishes: 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 (46-DNS) (46-DNS). Matt had such a commanding lead in the standings that he did to sail the last two races. I also heard Matt won race 8 by almost a half a leg. For those of us that competed at last year’s NA’s this is a way too familiar story.
It's not too early to get these dates on your calendars:
DN Western Challenge - December 2-4, 2016 Best ice in Minnesota
2017 Western Region DN Regatta - January 7-8, 2017 - backup dates January 14-15, 2017
2017 DN Gold Cup and NA's - Jauary 22-28, 2017 - The Western Region hosts this event for the first time in 6 years! Mike Miller, Western Region Rear Commodore along with his committee is planning for an exceptional event. Make sure you reserve the time off to attend. If you want to help in any way, my contact info is below.
John Bushey (US 5158) continues to win at the big events. Competing out of the Lake Riley Sugarbush and Ice Yacht Club, John is never one to rest on past laurels. So, it is no surprise that John, once again, won multiple ribbons at the 2016 MN State Fair competition with several varieties of his world famous maple syrup. Congratulations, John!
....and it is the GREAT WESTERN CHALLANGE!
NEIYC Commodore James "T" Thieler (DN US 5224) eats sleeps and breaths iceboating. If it has anything to do with racing he is all in. So, it is no surprise that with just 6 months to go (give or take a week or two) Mr. "T" optimistically posted the first NOR of the season.
The only thing "T" forgot to mention is that "Friday is always the best day," sailors of all ability are welcome and, of course, "its going to be epic!
What follows is T's post on the NEIYC web site:

Six Months…
